MBA degree programs in Sri Lanka


The Master of Business Administration is the premier, and most popular, business postgraduate business degree. It is an educational in character, because it is awarded by universities but it stresses on practical aspects of management.
MBA programs normally cover a wide range of courses in the program’s first year, then concentrate on a specialized curriculum in the second year. Specializations include: accounting; economics; Entrepreneurship; finance; IT; e-Governance; business; operations management; organizational behavior; marketing; real estate; and strategy etc.
In Sri Lanka, Management faculties of National Universities run a variety of MBA programs. In addition, foreign accredited institutions offer MBA degrees. Today, MBA and Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degrees can be even obtained through on-line, distance learning or e-learning.

Technical and Vocational Education in Sri Lanka: certificates, diplomas, degrees



After O/L or A/L examination you can enter into one of the government sponsored vocational technical training institutes and get a training in a required profession, job or get a certificate, diploma, higher national diploma or a bachelors degree. Employed persons can follow the course while doing the job as apprentices or trainees.

There are various government institutes under Ministry of Vocational and Technical Education offer various training programs: TVEC, HRDC, NITE, DTET, VTA, NAITA, CITA, INGRIN Institute of Printing, NIBM, CGTTI, HRDC and CITI.
Some of the key training methods are listed below.
National Vocational Qualification Courses by Vocational Training Authority
By various training courses conducted by this institute you can obtain local and international recognized certificate, diploma or a National Vocational Qualification (NVQSL) in a particular field relevant to a job.
The NVQSL provides the opportunity to achieve international recognition for qualifications, skills and knowledge. There are seven levels of qualifications from Level 1 to Level 7.  National Certificate for Level 1 is recognizing the acquisition of a core of entry level skills. National  Certificate for Level 2, 3 and 4 is recognizing the increasing levels of competencies. Level 4 qualification awards for full national craftsmanship.  Level 5 and 6 is a National Diploma and it recognizes the increasing levels of competencies ranging from technical level to management level. Level 7 is a Bachelors Degree or equivalent. Certification of these levels are carried out by the institutions accredited by the TVEC and they are nationally recognized.
National certificate from Technical Colleges
There are 37 Technical Colleges scattered throughout Sri Lanka. These institutions are managed by Department of Technical Education & Training which functions under the Ministry of Skills Development, Vocational and Technical Education.  They offer National Certificates and Advanced diplomas in engineering technician, engineering craft and business studies.

Sri Lanka Institute of Advanced Technical Education (SLIATE) has Advanced Technical Institute (ATI) in every province for both Engineering and Business Studies. At present it manages and supervises 10 separate Advance Technical Institutes and 7 Sections housed in the Technical Colleges under Department of Technical Education and Training to conduct the courses of Higher National Diplomas and National Diplomas.
IET (Formerly: Technician Training Institute) offer  four year National Diploma in Engineering Sciences (NDES) course. This course contains  theoretical instructions and industrial training. The academic component of the course is conducted at this institute and industrial training is imparted at recognized industrial establishment. The course provided nine (09) specialization’s under the three main disciplines of Engineering Civil, Electrical and Mechanical.

German Technical Training Institute Moratuwa- Admission to full time courses

You can now apply for technical training courses offered by Ceylon German Technical Training Institute Moratuwa, under National Apprenticeship scheme.

Both males and females between 16 – 22 years who passed G.C.E. (Ordinary Level) with a minimum of six subjects including a language and Mathematics in one sitting or applicants who has special skills can apply for these courses.  Medium of Examination & Training Instruction will be in Sinhala & Tamil.
Primary selection of candidates for admission will be merit based on the written examination.

Admission to Sri Lanka School of Agriculture – Diploma in Agriculture



Update: For 2012 course – apply before 2012 May 31
The Sri Lanka School of Agriculture (SOAA) of the Department of Agriculture (DOA), Sri Lanka offer two year Diploma in Agriculture program in five different locations at Kundasale in Kandy District, Palwehera at Matale District, Angunakolapallassa in Hambantota district, Vavunia in Vavunia district, and Karapincha in Rathnapura district. Annual student intake for these four institutions is about 265. This course consists of both theory and practical classes. Tuition is free to citizens of Sri Lanka.

This course prepares students to own and operate farm or agricultural enterprises, and to get employment in private or non-government organizations in agricultural sector and yo get employment in government organizations as intermediate technical officers in the agricultural sector.
To qualify for admission students must
i. Be between 17-25 years
ii. Passing G.C.E. (O/L) in six subjects at less than two setting including credit pass for Sinhala Language/ Literature or Tamil Language / Literature, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies or Agriculture as well as passing 5 subjects with 3 credits at one setting
iii. Studied in G.C.E.(A/L) in bio stream and got a pass for one subject.
iv. G.C.E. (O/L) credit pass for English is required to follow course in English medium.

Degree programs of John Kotelawala Defence University Academy


Sir John Kotelawala Defense University (KDU) offers degree courses at both undergraduate and post graduate levels. Founded in 1981 as a Defence Academy, KDU was elevated to the level of a university in 1986.
It offers following degree programs:

SLIIT for Information technology degrees and diplomas

Sri Lankan Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) is a degree awarding institute recognized by University Grants Commission (UGC) of Sri Lanka. It is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU). SLIIT offers local degrees and degrees in collaboration with foreign partner universities in Australia and the United Kingdom. At present, SLIIT operates two main campuses: Malabe City Campus and Metropolition campus in Kollupitiya. Also it operates two centers at Matara and Kandy. SLIIT has over 100 academic and professional staff members.

Cost (Tuition Fees)
Approximate cost for IT related degrees is about Rs 72000.00 per semester, and rate per semester increase each year. Cost is very much higher for foreign degree programs.

Sri Lanka Law College and Attorney at Law Entrance examination


The Sri Lanka Law College is the the oldest institution for training of professionals in the country. It has trained almost all the lawyers in Sri Lanka and it is the only gateway to the legal profession in the country. Open Universiy also offers Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree.

Admissions

There are three main channels of admission to the College.
(1) Direct admission of those who qualify via Law Entrance Examination for admission. The minimum academic qualification recognised for admission is four passes in the General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) Examination and credit passes in Sinhala/Tamil in the General Certificate of Education (Ordinary Level) Examination. The entrance examination is highly competitive and only a limited number gain admission on the results of this examination.
(2) Admission of Law graduates of Sri Lankan and foreign Universities – LL.B (Bachelor of Laws) Degree holders from either the University of Colombo or the Open University of Sri Lanka can enter this way. These Law graduates need not sit the entrance examination and they are also exempted from taking the first and second year examinations. They only need to take the final examination at the Law College.
(3) Admission of members of the legal profession of commonwealth countries
The Attorneys at Law course at the Law College is of 3 years duration except for the law graduates as above referred to. On passing the final examination students have to undergo an apprenticeship of six
months under a lawyer of at least 8 years standing and follow a practical training course
conducted by the Law College with the assistance of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka
and their senior members.

Law Entrance Examination

The CLE (Council of Legal Education) conducts an entrance examination each year for eligible persons, for selection of students to Law College. The examination consists of a written test of 2 hours duration, titled “Background to the Law.”
The syllabus for the test consists of:
(a) Nature of Law – role and function of law in society;
(b) Sources of Law – evolution of the Legal system of Sri Lanka;
(c) Constitution – a general knowledge of the main features of the
Constitution of the Democratic socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and the powers and of the Legislature, Executive and the Judiciary;
(d) Current Socio-legal Issues – including functions, training and skills required of a lawyer.
The Brochure, the Application Form and the Course Book may be obtained from the College on payment of the requisite fee during the times specified in the Press advertisement announcing the acceptance of applications for the Entrance Examination, which is usually published in March/April of each year.
The Law College does not offer any courses to prepare students for the Entrance Examination, but there are classes conducted by different private institutes.
